When Mark,my Spanish flatmate, walked in after watching SlumDog
and asked me "Is it really like that ? Is everyone so poor out there ?"
I could not help shaking my head with "Its-not-all-like-that"
I mean there is no denying Its exists
Poverty
Beggary
crime
Communal violence
Corruption
Danny Boyle just bolstered the shady underbelly of India.I dont blame
him a bit,he is making a movie,he is telling a story and he tells it
with brilliance.
He is not making a statement on India .
But still there is a morbid fascination with everything sordid in India. He packaged all stereotype India has together to make the background for protagonist and other characters stark and ugly .
Just like an average tourist happily capturing poverty of India
on ground of creativity .
The movie harps on the fact subconsciously that India is marred with such incidents ,maybe it is .
But then thats not India in nut-shell.
Having said that I still say that I enjoyed the movie.
But its difficult for me digest the fact that millions of non-indians
out there will walk out of the theatre conjuring images of abject poverty, corruption and crime for my country .
It poses a question to every Indian "Revel Notoriety" or "Die in oblivion".Rehman rocks anyway :-)
May be the "All characters in this movie are fictional and has no resemblance to dead or living " at start could be made bolder before
screening.
Just a Thought :)

I completely agree to what you have written. Its the image that people end up forming in their minds about India, BUT India is not only about corruption and poverty as portrayed in the storyline.
On a side note, I loved the movie and had goosebumps all through ;)
